Miss Elizabeth Catherine Ross is a native of
Anderson, Indiana. Her family, however, moved to Pontiac, Michigan
in the mid 1920s, hoping to take advantage of economic
opportunities. She graduated from Pontiac High School in 1936 and
enrolled in what was then Tennessee A&I State College, majoring in
Foods and Nutrition. After graduation, Miss Ross stayed on at the College for seven years as assistant director of the college cafeteria, where 3,000 meals were served daily. She pursued graduate studies at Wayne State University and dietetic training at Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, where she had the distinction of becoming the first black intern. After a successful internship at Harper, which she credits to valuable lessons learned at her Alma Mater, she became a registered dietitian. Her outstanding performance merited a position at Pontiac State Hospital. Miss Ross has been described as a role model, leader, and a pioneer, as well as an example of the type of leader that Tennessee A&I State College sent into the world in the 1940s and 1950s. Her service includes organizing food and clothing drives for the "Jay Shop" when Michigan's economy was particularly hard hit in the 1970s. She and others founded the Pontiac Pancake Shelter, which provides a good breakfast, great coffee, and conversation to many diverse citizens of Pontiac. Miss Ross has been recognized with numerous awards for her community and civic service. Some of her awards are: 1984 Resolution of the City of Pontiac, Michigan; 1990 Delta Sigma Theta Recognition Award; Special Tribute by Michigan's House of Representatives, honoring her lifetime achievements and commitments to her family; and the NAACP Community Service Award. Miss Ross continued service to others through her affiliation with numerous organizations, namely: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club; Church of God Women's Auxiliary, Pontiac, Michigan; Board of Directors of the J-Shop; and YWCA Committee Member. Miss Ross has been described as one who believes in sharing, caring, and giving of her time, talents, and resources to meet the needs of those in her community. What a legacy!! |
